Application Preparation

Know what the exam and the score count

Grades are worth 30 of the 100 points and a multiple-choice exam is worth 70. The grades are largely set, so focus on the application, the information session and test day.

Checked against HTHS's published admissions pages on November 5, 2026.

Testing

How HTHS scores applicants.

Grades are worth 30 of the 100 points and a multiple-choice exam is worth 70. The exam has no essay questions.

The exam
The admissions test is January 9, 2027. It covers mathematics and English language arts, and a picture ID is required.
What it covers
The exams are based on the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. MCVSD publishes an exam guide with sample questions.
Format
Every item on the exam is multiple choice, and students record answers on a bubble answer sheet. There are no essay or open-ended questions.
Scoring
Applicants earn up to 100 points: 15 for the 7th grade final GPA, 15 for the 8th grade first marking period GPA, 35 for the Math exam and 35 for the Writing and Language Arts exam. The minimum score for admission is 75.
Cut-off
Applicants need at least 75 points to be eligible at any MCVSD school, but there is no set cut-off score above 75.
Preparing
HTHS says there is no way and no need to prepare for the exam. MCVSD does not endorse any company or organization that solicits students for review classes or practice tests.
  1. 01

Ask the school counselor to confirm the 7th grade final and 8th grade first marking period grades on file.

  2. 02

Use the sample questions in the MCVSD exam guide to see the format, and bring a picture ID on test day.

Preparation plan

A plan that works backward from the deadline.

Adjust the pace to your student's schedule. The order matters more than the exact days.

  1. First

    Confirm Monmouth County residency

If your student attends school outside the county, ask that school for residency verification.

  2. Early

    Attend an information session

MCVSD requires at least one session at the academy your student plans to apply to.

  3. Next

    Apply before November 30

Submit the online application, then print the confirmation page and checklist.

  4. Next

Hand the printout to the school

A school counselor or principal sends the documents, postmarked by December 18, 2026.

  5. January 9, 2027

    Sit the admissions test

Bring a picture ID. Every item is multiple choice.

  6. After the exam

    Wait for results

MCVSD says processing takes about four to six weeks after exams are scored.
